Elephant is hand sewn from 19th century walnut dyed muslin and filled with early fabric scraps.
First robin of spring is hand sewn from 19th century gray suiting and early faded red wool.
An early rusty square nail is Robin's beak. Her eyes are stitched with an early glass bead added.
I used an old jar with an old tomato seed label to create Elsie Ann Loves "Mata's". She sits on top of the jar which is filled with thistle.
I found this antique straw stuffed tomato with it's original old pins at the Music Valley Show here in Nashville.
"Simply Lila" is a simple Rag-Doll hand sewn from 19th century walnut dyed muslin and filled with early fabric scraps.
"Annie's Playtime" was inspired by a well loved antique straw filled Bunny and some well used old tin dolly pot & cups. I used a cylinder shaped box and covered it in a 19th century double pink calico with a tiny heart design.
The inside of the box is lined with a calico stock paper, that is where Annie keeps her tin cups and pot. I added a quilt piece to the top of the box and stitched "x's" around it. "Annie" is naively cross stitched.

"Sarah June" is a simple Black Folk Art cabin doll. She is filled with early fabric scraps and batting.

I used a tall oval box and covered it in 19th century quilt fabrics in blue calicoes & blue gingham check.
I attached to the top of the box an antique straw stuffed lamb with glass eyes, by hand stitching.

The inside is covered in a plaid stock paper.
The top of the box is a very early homespun wool which is stitched with tiny "x's", it has a bit of early batting to fill it.
Hanging from an old button are 2 naive strawberries, hand sewn from early faded red cotton with early muslin leaves, the seeds are stitched using early darning thread.
A lovely and fat Bluebird sits on the top of top of the box, she is stitched in place. Bluebird is hand sewn from an early faded blue quilted bonnet piece and is filled with early rags & batting. Her beak is an old square nail, her eyes are stitched with an early glass jet bead added.

Tied around Bunny's neck is some twill with a piece of early floral calico tied to it.
Bunny measures 7-1/2 inches long and stands 6-1/4 inches tall.

I stitched 3 strawberries in slightly different proportions from early walnut dyed muslin, using this cloth to create the sepia tone. I added some early brown silk velvet for leaves and early glass jet beads for the seeds. They are filled with 19th C. batting & scented Buck wheat hulls.

This tiny rag doll measures 3-3/4 inches tall. She is hand sewn from early homespun with an over stitched face of early cotton.

"Dixie" is a sweet doll done in my impression of "Beecher Baby" style.
Her head is triple needle sculpted for depth. Her eyes are stitched with early fabric and 1800's black shoe buttons. Her mouth is early faded red cotton separately applied.
Dixie has hand sewn leather boots and early black socks. She measures 15 inches tall.

She wears a 19th century calico blue bonnet lined with the original belt from the doll dress. Her face is stitched with a pinch of a nose.

A tiny impressionistic "BEECHER BABY" Is hand sewn from an early black silk cotton blend cloth.
She measures 7-1/4 inches tall.
She wears an apron with a pocket hand sewn from a 19th c. faded blue window pane check homespun.
In the pocket of her apron is an early blue checked homespun scrap.
Her full gathered, hand sewn sun bonnet is also sewn from the 19th c. faded blue window pane homespun.
Her head is double needle sculpted with homespun scrap eyes and an early black glass bead. Her lips are stitched from a faded red over-dyed floss.
"COLONIAL PIN KEEP DOLL"
The bottom of her gown is an early blue star quilt, it is filled with quilt rags & lavender.
The next portion of her gown is hand sewn from 2 different 19th c. blue calicoes.
Her bodice matches one of the early blue calicoes of her skirt. A 19th c. very faded blue wool challis is gathered for modesty.
An early blue checked homespun is used to stitch her apron and attached needle case. Her needle case is attached to the apron as if to be a pocket. Several old needles are included.
"EARLY WOOL RABBIT"
Using an old lamb for inspiration, I created this "Rabbit". I shortened the legs, added a "puff" tail and rabbit ears.
The Rabbit is hand sewn from a 19th C. woolen blanket. The ears are lined with early cotton cloth, the eyes are 19th C. tiny glass beads and the nose is stitched with a tiny piece of early silk velvet.
An Early Calico in faded bittersweet is tied around Rabbit's neck. A tiny rusty bell is added. Rabbit measures 6-3/4 inches long and stands 4-1/2 inches tall.

"KITTEN" is done in the early style of cloth toys. She is hand sewn from very worn 19th c. homespun with a tiny faded stripe.
Kitten's eyes are early brown shoe buttons, her nose is a bit of early brown velvet. She wears a neutral brown calico around her neck.
'MARGARET OF THE PRAIRIE"
Margaret is done in the style of early Prairie Dolls. She measures 11-1/4 inches tall to her longest leg, she may also sit.
Her head is very stocking over layers of early cotton to form dimension by needle sculpting.

I hand stitched 3 eggs in 3 different 19th Century blue calicoes. They are the size of REAL eggs, measuring approx 2-1/2 inches. They are filled with early batting & scented Buckwheat hulls.

Over time I have gathered some things that I loved and was finally able to put them together with a little something from my own hands.
This is a wonderful embroidery hoop! It measures 9-1/4 inches by 5-1/8 inches.
This is a lovely antique needle case hand sewn from faded red gingham. Inside the needle case is some old wool to hold the needles.
This a WONDERFUL basket with painted egg. I used an artisan made buttocks basket which I painted & aged in oxblood & drab gray.
I used an original paint technique for the gray color. The blue designs are hand painted and taken from original 19th century crock designs. I stitched some blue and faded 19th century clarets together and tied them to the basket handle.

One lonely old oil cloth doll shoe is used to make this "wee" sized pin keep.
A Black Folk Art Rag Doll is hand sewn from an early black wool flannel. She has a pinched nose, stitched eyes and her mouth is early faded red wool separately applied in 2 parts.
From a bittersweet floral 1800's calico is a hand sewn apron. A heart is sewn as her pocket, "MAMA" is naively stitched. An early gingham is nestled in the pocket.
Mama's Girl measures 9-3/4 inches tall.

This antique campaign bunting is a combination of a deep cranberry red and the blue has faded to a drab gray. I lined the bunting with early cotton before covering the grain measure.
I had a lonely "orphan" doll shoe that I re purposed as a needle sharp, it is also filled with batting & Buck Wheat hulls.

When the Slaves were given their freedom after the Civil War, they were supposedly given 40 acres of land and the loan of an old Mule.
Mule has stitched eyes with an added early glass bead, a little bit of early wool is his nose. An 1800's star calico wraps around his neck with a rusty "Liberty" bell dangling from it.
Samuel is hand sewn from early drab twill cotton. He is filled with early rag scraps. He carries a Patriotic ball hand sewn from early red ticking and blue star calico.
He has old leather "paw" pads and leather shoestring tail. He measures 4-3/4 inches tall.

This early sawdust filled doll was extremely fragile and had to be totally repaired, ready to be loved & cherished for another 150 years!
As I worked I saved all of the sawdust that had fallen from her tattered body. I stitched a homespun piece, filled it with the early sawdust and it sits inside a 19th C. calico ditty bag tied to her waist.
Her face is stitched & sculpted. Her hair is separately sewn on ringlets. Dolly has a necklace of tiny early jet beads.
She wears a blouse sewn from a 19th C. calico in butterscotch & brown. Her full apron is an early butterscotch homespun. Dolly measures 9-1/2 inches tall to her longest leg.

I found this Birch branch in the perfect shape & size for a hanger. It measures 13-1/4 inches long.
I added an early bone button to one side, then wrapped heavy rusty wire around the center and straight up to a curve. A GREAT Primitive hanger!
